"Jennifer Morton was twenty-four years old, an auburn-haired, grey-eyed refugee from the drab monotony of post-war London.
From the moment she arrived in the luminous Australian summer, she was captivated by the beauty and vitality of this new country. Her Australian relatives, who made the trip possible, welcomed her warmly and wanted her to stay. Quite unexpectedly, Jennifer met a man who made her want the same thing. He was Carl Zlinter, an educated Czechoslovakian working in the lumber camps of Victoria Provience. Though Carl had been a surgeon in Europe, he was not allowed to practice medicine in Australia. But there was an accident at the lumber camp where he worked and the lives of two men depended on his skill as a doctor. Jennifer took on the improvised role of nurse and worked side by side with him. And, as he risked his future she left part of her own past behind. This meeting was the start of an idyllic period for Carl and Jennifer. Each was already in love with the country. Now they could share its wonders with each other. But just as their friendship ripened into love, news from England brought grave complications and their happiness seemed doomed. Nevil Shute tells this story of Carl and Jennifer and their different worlds with warmth and understanding. And his affection for the people of his creation is equalled by the immense delight which he himself feels for the pioneer country in which most of the novel is set - the country in which he now makes his own home. The result is an invigorating and impassioned book, written from the heart with all of the tenderness and humanity that have made Nevil Shute one of the most beloved story-tellers of our generation." |

The Far Country was the first novel Nevil Shute wrote after his relocation to Australia in the summer of 1950. His book, Round the Bend had already been completed, and was being held for publication to keep continuity in time between his novel releases. |
