William Heinemann Ltd 1st Edition

STORY PREVIEW
"Alan is 39 years old. An Australian by birth, he has been in London for the past five years and arrives home only to hear disquieting news. A young woman working for his family has been found dead.

She called herself Jessie Proctor. That's all Alan knows, for she apparently destroyed all personal documents before the end. But hearing of the girl - knowing what she meant to the people he holds dear - Alan sets out to reconstruct the past. He has a mystery to unravel - another's life to discover. The answers fall into place gradually and, as they do, Alan finds a new answer to his own future.

BOOK TRIVIA
After completing and publishing his autobiographical work, Slide Rule, Shute began reworking an unfinished story started five years earlier, Blind Understanding, a novel created from ideas developed in an even earlier story he had completed, but which was only published posthumously, 42 years after his death, entitled The Seafarers. The result was a new novel published in 1955 entitled Requiem for a Wren. In the U.S. it was published under the title The Breaking Wave.
