"Peter Marshall was a bomber pilot and Gervase Robertson a WAAF on his station. With complete youthful ambition, Peter fell head over heels in love with Gervase - and she with him. But Gervase hesitated. In these precarious days it was hard to distinguish between shadow and substance...Peter's urgent, impetuous courtship and Gervase's honest delight in his company filled the precious hours when, off duty, they could be together. And their work, full of danger and the stark realism of war, gave every moment a special significance.
It is the oldest story in the world - told with such freshness that it will recapture for its readers the high heart of youth. PASTORAL is a happy book, filled with the glow and discovery of young love, which can never be extinguished even by war. Against the background of the lovely English countryside, we meet the men and women of the flying station, and the men of Peter's crew, bound together by the intimacy and mutual trust of their fifty-odd missions over enemy territory. Vivid war writing is here, and spontaneous chuckling humor as well. And, of course, this being Nevil Shute's book, the flying scenes are magnificent. The story is told with all the magic of this skillful novelist's pen, and builds to an almost unbearably exciting climax. PASTORAL is a book to delight Nevil Shute's thousands of readers." |

Collecting Tips* for William Morrow and Company Edition |

Pastoral is another title that The Book Of The Month Club did an excellent job in reproducing.
Actually, my hat is off to them for providing books of equal quality to the first edition copies.
To determine the differences in the First Edition and the BOMC edition, let us first look at the dust jacket. The front of the first edition's dust jacket is displayed at the top of this page. The BOMC (Book of the Month) Edition is identical on the front of the dust jacket. As is common with the Morrow Nevil Shute first editions, the price ($2.50 on this title) is printed on the inside flap, in the upper right hand corner of the dust jacket. There is no price listed anywhere on the BOMC dust jacket. |

Also, at the bottom of the back inside flap of the dust jacket, it reads, "Printed in U. S. A.". This is not shown on the dust jacket of the first edition.
As it is with the other Shute Morrow first editions, there is nowhere in the book where it signifies that it is a first edition. You must do some detective work to determine that. There is no significant difference in the covers of the books. There are, however, a few differences inside to help you, in the event the book is missing its dust jacket. At the bottom of the book club copyright page it reads, "PRINTED AND BOUND IN THE U. S. A. BY KINGSPORT PRESS, INC, KINGSPORT, TENN.". or "Printed in the United States of America by H. Wolff, New York". At the bottom of the copyright page of 1st Edition something different is printed: "PRINTED IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA." As with all Nevil Shute Morrow Editions, make sure there are no additional printing shown on the copyright page, and there are no other publishers shown to have printed your edition. |

| *The collecting tips on the The Nevil Shute Book Page website are only provided as a tool to assist in identifying the original publications of Nevil Shute titles. Several people have generously contributed information and images to enhance its appearance and accuracy, however, please keep in mind that this site will always be a work in progress and have the potential for error. Regardless of the author you collect, I would strongly recommend that consumers/collectors never rely solely on a single source for determining the value or status of their book, including this website. Always seek multiple reliable resources to evaluate your edition. |
